Keeping the patient comfortable and functional while performing minor tooth movement procedures is the key to successfully treating adult patients. In this example, a lower active partial with a mesial kicker spring is being used to move the left 1st bicuspid forward to create space for a fixed bridge or an implant. Finger springs are guiding the laterals labially after some light mesial-distal stripping has been done to gain the needed space for these anteriors, and two denture teeth are being used to maintain the space for the patient’s 1st and 2nd right bicuspids. Clasps and rests are placed to stabilize the appliance and keep the patient comfortable. All of this can be accomplished with one well-designed appliance. Note - For proper appliance construction, always send an opposing model and a bite registration. For more information, see Space Maintainers’ Practice Building Bulletin No. 6.
