Many patients need extra fluoride protection on a daily basis. Unfortunately just giving them fluoride and telling them to use it after they brush usually doesn’t work. Patients clearly need a tool that will help them follow your instructions. One of the best methods of motivating patients to use fluoride every day is to give them a tray delivery system. Simply have the patient fill the tray with 1.1% neutral sodium fluoride and wear it for five minutes after they brush. Then take the tray out and spit out the excess without rinsing. That’s all it takes to give them the extra protection they need. Neutral sodium fluoride is recommended as safest for composites and porcelain restorations. Do not use acidulated fluorides.
