Etched Metal Cast Bar Splint

A cast metal bar splint is the most rigid method of splinting and is commonly used when there is a significant amount of mobility. Although this appliance is bonded into place with a resin cement, its resistance to displacement cannot be solely dependent upon the composite bond. Therefore, each tooth must be individually prepared with vertical stops and in a manner to encompass the greatest surface area possible. This will ensure maximum retention and resistance to dislodging forces. Because this is a cast metal splint, accurate impressions are essential to assure the desired fit. Note - There are two tricks to successfully splinting these highly mobile periodontally involved teeth. The first is to get an accurate impression. To do this you must stabilize the teeth to be splinted by temporarily bonding their facial surface together with composite. Once this is accomplished, block out any interproximal undercuts that might cause your impression to become locked in place. The second trick is to keep these teeth splinted together with composite until the final splint is cemented.
