Cantilevered Herbst
2443 C

The Cantilevered Herbst is excellent for correction of skeletal Class II malocclusions -- especially if patient compliance is an issue. As with all Herbst designs, effectiveness is enhanced if transverse deficiencies are addressed first. Many of the Herbst appliances in use today include additions to the basic design in order to simultaneously correct multiple factors which may have contributed to the malocclusion. Expansion screws (to widen the arches), arch wire tubes (to combine fixed appliances) and other modifications extend the treatment effects of the Herbst beyond mere Class II correction. Once expansion of either or both arches is accomplished, Class II correction will occur more rapidly via a combination of dental and skeletal changes. End result: a predictable Class I occlusion. Note: Use of stainless steel crowns (as opposed to acrylic bonding) is quite popular -- due to excellent patient acceptance and comparative ease of clinical application and removal.
