Whether you need to distalize a molar to allow room for the eruption of an impacted bicuspid or you simply need to recapture the ideal space for a pontic, the Fixed Sectional Distalizer is often the appliance of choice. It will bodily move a molar that has drifted mesially. Patients readily accept this design because the facial surfaces of the anteriors do not need to be bracketed. Instead, adequate anchorage is accomplished by placement of a lingual-bonded retainer that includes the first bicuspids. Brackets are placed on the cuspid and first bicuspid to support a sectional wire that runs through the buccal tube of the molar band. Nickel Titanium Coil Spring is compressed on the sectional wire prior to ligating it to the brackets on the bicuspid and cuspid. If desired, a Gurin Lock can be placed on the sectional wire -- distal to the bicuspid for subsequent adjustments (typically not necessary unless a significant amount of distalization is required).
