Lateral Tongue Thrust Inhibitor
1119

Sometimes patients develop a lateral tongue thrust. When this happens, it can inhibit the eruption of the bicuspids, cuspids, and cause an arch asymmetry to occur. To break this pattern, tongue loops are placed lingual to the premolars and cuspids in a Hawley Retainer, and the labial bow is carried all the way back to the molars. Wearing the appliance prevents the tongue from being displaced laterally during swallowing and helps to keep the patient’s cheek away as well. This permits the posterior teeth to erupt into occlusion. Bonded buttons and inter-arch elastics are often used to encourage eruption. Note: An opposing model and bite relationship are required.
