Pediatric Dental AppliancesWe all use appliances intuitively. When a patient needs an implant after losing a tooth, we intuitively know that space maintenance is called for. We know that it is necessary to provide the patient with a means for preserving esthetic integrity. We know how to place a temporary partial. What we don’t always connect with is that there are many different options for replacing that tooth — even on an interim basis.

A flipper is never the only option. There are palate-free appliances, bonded appliances, fixed appliances — or fixed appliances that can be easily removed when access to the surgical site is necessary. It is a lack of familiarity with appliance therapy — this missing link in our knowledge base (in addition to the missing “orthodontics” link) — that often stymies us and intimidates us and prevents us from providing a full menu of dental care options to our patients.Pediatric Dental Appliances
