The 3D® Nance appliance is used (1) to maintain molar position during the mixed dentition and (2) to create an anchorage unit and prevent mesial molar drag (when using fixed mechanics to torque the incisor roots lingually). The advantage of placing the Nance Button with Wilson 3D® lingual attachments is the resultant ease of removal -- for both hygiene purposes and adjustments. Once the significant orthodontic movements are completed, the Nance Button can be easily removed without having to cut solder joints or remove bands. Note: This appliance must be monitored carefully. The acrylic pad can act as a food trap. To prevent the pad from actually becoming embedded in the tissue, the dentist can control "trapping" via use of an oral irrigator.
