Despite the fact that temporomandibular disorders (TMD, also known popularly as TMJ) are extremely common, there is still a lot of debate about the best treatment. TMD/TMJ can be caused by a whole host things, including:

• Grinding and clenching teeth
• Trauma to the jaw (such as whiplash or a fall)
• Arthritis
• Stress
• Misaligned teeth
• Movement of the disc in the temporomandibular joint
Dentists have also long observed that even when two people demonstrate the same behavior (ex. constant teeth grinding) one may develop TMD/TMJ while the other is fine. It only makes sense that treatment for this curious disorder can be a challenge as well.
One of the most popular treatments for TMD/TMJ is the construction of a custom mouth splint (also called a mouth guard, bite plate, orthotic, and bite appliance).
Do splints work to relieve the pain of TMD/TMJ? Surprisingly, little research has been done on this area, so we have to trust the collected wisdom of our experience with patients. This experience tells us that splints can help relieve pain in many patients, but that not everyone will respond equally. Some patients do better with a combination of splint, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and jaw stretches.
Others may feel no relief at all and require more invasive dental work (like bridges, crowns, and braces) or even jaw surgery.
